Avoid the 2 Biggest Love Mistakes with This Valentine’s Meditation

It’s Valentine’s again — that Hallmarky holiday that encourages us all to buy things like, candy, cards and flowers for our beloved.

Can you tell I’m not a big fan?  Because, I think there are bigger, deeper, more healing gifts we can give to our beloved, and because I believe Valentine’s should be every day.

Really.

We should honor our beloved, our life partner, every day if we want our relationship to be the best it can be. We need to invest in our partnership daily, and when we do, it grows and gets better, like anything else we truly invest in.

The two biggest problems I see in relationships today are:

  1. People taking their partner for granted.
  2. Partners falling into reactive patterns with each other (after all, their original attraction is often based on the magnetic pull of an old pattern around love that needs healing).

The first is obvious and easy to fall into. I remember when I moved to Florida to attend college years ago. I fell in love with the exotic palm trees, because I came from rainy Seattle where they didn’t exist.

Cut to 20 years of me living in Los Angeles, and I didn’t even notice all the beautiful palm trees!

I know, so sad.

Your partner can become like an unnoticed palm tree, still as exotic and beautiful as ever, but practically unseen by you, because you’ve become so accustomed to him or her.

Even more sad, huh?

The second point I made above is more complicated, but you know you’re doing it when you and your partner are basically having the same fight over and over. It’s a sign that you’re hooked into each other’s deepest needs (and past traumas) in an unconscious, oppositional way.

For instance, a woman whose father never gave her any attention may fall in love with a man who’s mother smothered him.  If they both stay in their old story, they will continually trigger each other in an endless loop.

The woman will feel unseen by the man and try to get closer, and then he’ll feel smothered by her and try to get farther away (which will trigger her even more).

If they don’t address their unconscious behaviors (and stories) from their past, they’ll likely hurt each other repetitively.

And that’s just one example. I could probably come up with hundreds.

The meditation I created (video above) is meant to help you stay out of these two relationship traps.

It will help you to lovingly put your own neediness aside to cater to your partner. And what you give to others — especially your beloved — it truly does come back to you (but the catch is: you can’t do it because you want it to come back to you — you have to do it from a place of deep love for your partner).

Commit to doing this meditation a few times a week and you’ll see a big difference in the way you relate to your beloved — and the way your beloved relates to you.
